Smart Electric Coupe

2015 Smart Electric Coupe Electric Vehicle (EV)

Ever since college, I’ve been interested in electric vehicles (EV). I was finally able to lease a Smart Electric Coupe in 2015, and I love it.

Kenny Levias, salesman at Mercedes-Benz of Portland helped me with the lease. It was a straightforward transaction with no hassles. The Smart Electric Coupe came in two packages and– although there were a few options to select– the number of available options was not overwhelming and most of the cars came with all the basic features you’d want.

The car has been excellent. I’ve driven it downtown, on the freeways, in rain, in snow, and even in ice. The car just drives. It’s quiet, there’s plenty of power, and it parks in spaces that are laughably small. For example, there’s one parking spot in the busy U.S. Bankcorp Tower lot that practically no one uses because it’s very small, and there’s a large pillar right where most driver’s doors would be. The Smart Electric Coupe fits in the spot hand-in-glove.

In January 2016, the vehicle was due for annual servicing, so I took the opportunity to take some photos while the car was on the lift, and why some of the drive train and electrics were visible.

The car is rear-wheel drive, so you can see the motor towards the top of the picture. You can also see the sealed battery pack at the bottom of the picture.

Under the rear storage area, you can see the high-voltage cables feeding down to the converter.

There isn’t much up front other than a couple of reservoirs for fluid.
