Portland Oregon has long been known as a liberal city, so it’s been somewhat more tolerant and accommodating of drug use and drug abuse than other major metropolitan areas. Seizing on a play on names based on the hit comedy t.v. show Portlandia, National Geographic unfortunately named an episode of it’s series Drugs, Inc. “Dopelandia.” The show aired July 23, 2014 and is still available online.
Methamphetamine is still Oregon’s #1 problem, but heroin is a significant problem in Portland. Between 2008 and 2012, the Portland Police Bureau reported a 71% increase in heroin cases, a 193% increase in oxycodone cases, and a whopping 471% increase in hydrocodone cases. Clearly Portland has an opioid problem.
