Bend is the county seat of Deschutes County, Oregon and nearly dead-center of the state of Oregon. No wonder they call it “Central Oregon.” The estimated population of the city is over 82,000 people and growing fast. There are hundreds of DUI arrests in Bend in any given year. The chief law enforcement agencies responsible for DUI enforcement in Bend are the Bend Police Department, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon State Police. The Oregon State Police maintain Intoxilyzer 8000 breath testing machines at the Bend Police Department.

In 2020, the Bend Police Department arrested 302 people for alcohol or drug DUII. Between January 1st, 2021 and March 2021, the Bend Police Department had arrested 43 people for alcohol or drug DUII. It’s important to note that these figures do not represent all the DUII arrests for these time-frames because DUII arrests in Bend can also be conducted by other law enforcement agencies.

DUI Checkpoints in Bend Oregon

There aren’t any DUI checkpoints in Bend because DUI checkpoints have been illegal in Oregon since 1987. However, there are frequently grant-funded DUI saturation patrols in Bend.

These are legal, and very common. Especially on holiday weekend, during Civil War ballgame. Also when there are beer and wine festivals. During these saturation patrols, the police tend to pull over as many cars as they can. If you’ve been arrested for DUI in Bend during a saturation patrol, contact an attorney immediately. Bend Oregon Implied Consent Hearings (aka DMV Hearings)

DMV Implied Consent hearings (often called “DMV hearings”) are typically held in Bend in a conference room at the WorkSource office located at: 1645 NE Forbes Road, Bend OR 97701. If you’ve been arrested or cited for DUI, you need to request a DMV Implied Consent hearing within 10 days of your arrest.

DUI Cases in Bend

DUI criminal cases in Deschutes County are sent to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution, and they are then heard by the Deschutes County Circuit Court. The judges of the Deschutes County Circuit Court are (in alphabetical order): Honorable Alta J. Brady (Presiding Judge), Honorable A. Michael Adler, Honorable Wells B. Ashby, Honorable Beth M. Bagley, Honorable Judge Bethany Flint, Honorable Stephen P. Forte, and Honorable Randy Miller. Deschutes County also has a justice court located in Redmond. Traffic violations related to DUI cases are sometimes heard at this justice court.

If you’ve been arrested or cited for a Bend DUI, your case will be a Deschutes County DUI case. In Oregon, most DUI cases are county cases (with a few exceptions near the Portland Metro area where some cases are referred to municipal courts). However, the City of Bend Attorney’s Office and the Bend Municipal Court don’t handle DUI case, therefore all Bend Oregon DUI cases are all referred to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging, and through the Deschutes County Circuit Court for case processing.
